Make 100: Birds 8 & 9, Blue Footed Boobies

A pair of boobies… I wasn’t quite satisfied with my first one and boobies should come in pairs so I made another.

I also made an instructional video about checking your boobies, very important… don;t worry if one booby is slightly bigger than the other. This is natural.

Make 100: Bird 7 Pheasant

He’s a pleasant pheasant … he looks like he’s in a bit of a hurry, I feel like he needs a bowler hat and a newspaper tucked under one wing!

#Make100 Bird 6 Needle Felted Flamingo

There might be a few flamingos in this project I love making them and I can’t seem to ever be 100% happy with a flamingo I’ve made.

I also started my own Youtube Channel where you can see me finishing and talking about this flamingo.

Please have a look at the video and subscribe to my channel if you like it and want to see more

#Make100 Bird 5 Heron

It’s been a little while since my last blog, the Kickstarter went crazy and I couldn’t keep up… and then it ended over 1000% funded! I’ve been plodding along, catching up with all the things I missed and all the boring stuff that goes into running a business.

Here’s the 5th bird, Heron… I’ll catch up with my posts over the next week hopefully. There should be some longer posts with a few birds coming up until I catch up with myself.

#Make100 Bird 3 & 4 Chaffinch & Blue Tit

Chaffinch is one of my favourite birds… I saw one in the park and had to make him. I’ve made many chaffinches in the past but this guy has something cheeky about him! His little chum blue tit has always been a favourite of mine… to make and to watch.  Both are full of personality! There’s now a little over a week left on my Kickstarter project… I have a lot of work ahead of me but I am excited by the challenge!

#Make100 Bird 2: Galah Cockatoo

He’s not quite finished yet but he’s a cutie. He needs a feet perch and my cold addled brain can’t quite work out how the drill works so I’m waiting till I have a few and doing all their perches at the same time.

IMG_7209IMG_7236Much amusement has been gained from me walking around the house shouting “FLAMIN’ GALAH!” alot… although I suspect the only one amused is me! IMG_7218

#Make100 Bird 1 Adelie Penguin

My Kickstarter got off to a flying start… just over a week in and over 1000% funded… yes, you read that right!

After a slow start due to personal reasons I’m now getting into making the birds, here’s the first one, an Adelie Penguin nestled along the beads I use to make my birds.

Things have gone so well that I have had to add another 100 birds to the project so it’s quite big and scary but I’m p for the challenge!

MAKE 100: Needle Felted Birds on Kickstarter

Hello again!

It’s been quite a while since I last posted here, my plan to have a bird a day month every year was sidelined last year by events beyond my control but this year I am back with a brand new, ambitious project.

kickstarter bannerI’m taking part in Kickstarter’s Make 100 project to bring 100 unique birds into the world in the style of the original bird a day project. I’ll be posting the birds here as I make them, so please check out the project page on kickstarter.

I can’t wait to get started!

Bird a Day: Final Thoughts

So the Bird a Day Challenge is over… here are a few questions I’ve been asked over the last week.

How do you feel now?

It’s finally over… it’s a strange feeling to be at the end of something, I do feel a sense of achievement at having done what I set out to do and I am tempted to make it a regular thing in my crafting as it forces me to be creative.

Doing something creative everyday has had a positive impact upon my well being and peace of mind too. I feel a lot better than I did at the beginning of the year, when I felt burnt out. People find it strange when I talk about not feeling creative considering the job I do but sometimes even a creative job starts to feel like a bit of a slog. I do feel more invigorated… things are starting to feel normal again.

What were your favourite birds to make?

My favourites surprised me! They were the ones that were most challenging initially but turned out the best. I’m very fond of the Spoonbill, Pelican, Dodo and the seagull… but my favourite is the Tree Creeper, because I saw one in the park and he caught the feeling of him perfectly!

Was it hard to make a bird in an hour?

The felting part is the easy bit! Making them tiny and starting with the bead cuts the time down… It’s the photographing and blogging that really takes up time! I didn’t take that into account when I set out to do this so it ended up taking up 2 hours of my day rather than just 1… next time I think I will find a better way to just snap a quick picture.

Did you miss any days?

I didn’t miss out a day of making but sometimes there just wasn’t time to photograph things or I was too tired. That just meant a couple of days when there were double posts.

Are you sick of looking at tiny bird feet?

Wait next time? You’re going to do this again?

Yes… but maybe not for a while… or on a weekly basis rather than daily.

When will the birds be up for sale?

I’m hoping to get them up for sale by monday… I will keep you posted.

What Advice would you give to anyone taking on a challenge like this?

Go for it! Even if you think you might fail… you should go for it. Find something that works for you and make sure you find a way to share it as being held accountable by others is great motivation. II have to admit… I tried something like this once before and didn’t share it and I failed, sharing was the best thing, it’s hard to work in a vacuum. You’ll be amazed how supportive people can be!

Also… make the time to do it, it could be anything, make a bird a day, a drawing a day, write something, bake something… it’s worth it, you’ll feel like a different person at the end an you will want to keep being creative!
